Building Your Vocabulary
Developing a vocabulary is largely achieved through repeated exposure to unfamiliar words in context. The more you read, the more new words you encounter. The more new words you encounter, the more new words you learn. It’s not a coincidence that the individuals who read the most are usually the individuals with the broadest vocabularies. Vocabulary development begins in infancy by listening to those around you and continues to develop through reading a wide variety of genres.
As the term progresses keep track of the new words you meet when you are reading. You may need to use a dictionary. However, sometimes the context is strong and you will learn the word on an initial reading.
